In 1989, after leaving a corporate position to afford more time for her young children, Janie Sutton found herself doing odd part time jobs. One of those jobs asked her to collect information from the county Planning and Development office regarding pool permits for a family member.

 

While waiting for the information, she noticed how overwhelmed the homeowners seemed as they navigated the process of applying for permits. She also saw that the home builders were clearly more familiar with the process yet frustrated with the unreliable time commitment that took them away from the job site. She recognized an opportunity for a third party to help facilitate and expedite the procedure for everyone.  So, she asked questions. A lot of questions. With the assistance and encouragement from several local builders and permit technicians, Special Assignments, Inc. was born. 

 

The first year was hit or miss- only permitting a few houses and pools in Gwinnett County, Georgia.  By the second year, her relationships and experience with multiple municipalities brought recognition to the services and her reputation reached larger builders in the Atlanta area. They became more receptive to the idea of an outside source handling their permits because of the faster turnaround time and expertise. 

 

Special Assignments, Inc. has survived the housing crash of 2008, COVID-19 in 2020, and countless fluctuations in the housing market. The SA team attributes its success to their adaptability and relationships within the local industry. Because the Atlanta area continues to grow, there are currently eight Permit Specialists serving areas all over north Georgia on the SA team.
